What Type of Employee Are You? Room For Improvement?

Five types of employees by level of commitment and the importance of employee ambassadors to an organization’s success.

What is the level of your employees’ commitment? Are they happy with their job or their position in the organization? As a manager, these are key issues for evaluating your team. In this regard, Colin Shaw lists five types of employees, based on their level of commitment to the company:

  • Employee Ambassadors: The employees who are most active in promoting the business and its brand promise. Their level of commitment is the highest to the organization and its clients.
  • Positive Loyalists: These employees have a positive emotional commitment and share a favorable view in favor of their company. They are loyal and perform their jobs well, even though they don’t defend the business at the same level as an ambassador.
  • Indifferent: These employees are generally satisfied with their employer, and not much more. They are reluctant to promote it, by, for example, sharing positive messages about the business.
  • Disinterested Seat-fillers: These employees lack emotional commitment to their company. They generally lack any interest in their jobs ( “It’s just a job!” ) and don’t talk about it, either in-house or on the outside.
  • Employee saboteurs: These employees, even though they receive a company paycheck, are actively working against the organization. In fact, they are detractors of your organization, complaining about company both in-house (ie: to other employees) and on the outside (eg: family, friends, customers).
